Winter Activities
Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, our winters are famous—and for good reason. When you see the blankets of powder that stretch till the horizon, or the hills covered in pristine snow just begging to be enjoyed, you’ll understand it too. Whether you like to ski, snowboard, or snuggle up with some cocoa after a long day’s hike, check out this video to get a head start on your own winter wonderland.
Fresh Air
Take in what you may not even know you’re missing: a gulp of fresh air. Escape from the smog, humidity and pollution and experience why less is more: less impurities mean more deep breaths, evening walks and laundry lines. This video clip can’t quite convey how invigorating even the smallest breath can be, but it’ll sure help.
Whales
This isn’t an opportunity that comes along often: the chance to get so close to whales in their natural habitat that you feel you could reach out and touch them. Find yourself a boat tour and marvel at the grace of such large creatures—the average humpback weighs as much as a house, but you wouldn’t know it from the way they leap from the water in their aquatic ballet. These creatures aren’t shy.
St. John's
Lively and peaceful, sophisticated and homey, bustling and easygoing—St. John’s is a city of contradictions. It must either be a big city that thinks it’s small, or a small city that doesn’t realize how big it is. Full of things to do (like nature walks, boat tours or local nightlife) and see (such as the art, culture and music found on our sidewalks), St. John’s is the perfect destination for the traveler who wants it all.
Icebergs
Few things in nature can slow the eye like the sight of these bergs. Take a boat tour down Iceberg Alley and get as close as you can to these natural marvels, spectacles that dot our shores more than anywhere else in the world. Come to think of it, that old saying about icebergs- that 90% of it is under the surface to discover- could easily apply to our whole province. Have a peek at what we mean in this video clip.
Hiking
You can learn so much about our province by simply going for a walk. With trails to suit every hiker’s taste, from multi-day adventure trails to leisurely, scenic strolls, hiking in Newfoundland and Labrador means traveling back in time—to a land without cell phones, fax machines or parking tickets. This video clip might explain better than we can- this view has to be seen to be understood.
L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site
History is found in every step on this National Historic Site, so take a step back in time and see what you find. The excavation of this Viking settlement in 1968 made it the first and only authenticated Norse site in North America. So steep yourself in Norse traditions in the same places they lived, worked and played. See the legends come to life in this brief video clip.
Gros Morne National Park
Stretched across 1,805 square kilometers in western Newfoundland, Gros Morne National Park has a piece of everything that makes our province unique. There’s no shortage of varied activities; the avid hiker can fill his day as easily as the easygoing picnicker. Sample the beautiful vistas of the park—from fjords to lowlands, tectonic plates to lush forests—in this short clip.
Coastline
Stretching for 29,000 km, our coastline contains a taste of all our landscapes: from lush greenery, to craggy rock faces, to the roar of surf meeting sand. Have a quick peek in this short video clip.
Birds
With 35 million seabirds routinely setting up shop on our shores – 25,000 gannets, 500,000 puffins, 7 million storm-petrels and 24,000 razorbills – our rocks can get more than a little crowded. See for yourself the birds dotting our bays, inlets and skies in this short clip.
Foundering Iceberg in Twillingate Newfoundland
This video captures a spectacular view of a multi-storey iceberg breaking apart in Spillers Cove, Twillingate. This giant iceberg broke apart in full view of a group who hiked out to the point to view the iceberg - one of the last of the season - and Mother Nature responded with this perfectly timed show.
Time-lapsed Painting of the Fresh Air Superboard
This striking video of an artist hand-painting a giant 3-D window into Newfoundland and Labrador, 60 feet above Toronto's Gardiner Expressway, was taken over a period of three weeks. The superboard is part of Newfoundland and Labrador's Fresh Air campaign which tempts travellers to escape to the province and leave smog and humidity behind.
